I write long-form journalism for, among others, London Review of Books, Das Magazin (Tages-Anzeiger), and The Guardian. Some time ago, I was the Editor, then Editor-at-large of COLORS magazine (2010-2014).
In 2023, I was awarded the Prix Média of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences for my dramatic account of a forgotten, seismic episode in Swiss history, first published in Das Magazin (Deutsch), then London Review of Books, where it was one of ten most-read articles of the year.
That history – the lost story of the world’s most-effective public health endeavour – is the subject of my first book, to be published by William Collins/HarperCollins UK and Hanser Verlag, Germany.
CCNow Award 2026
“Der Sturm” has won a CCNow Award, the foremost international prize for climate journalism, in the category Extreme Weather.
Thank you to everyone who spoke to me for this story; it was not easy, and often painful, to revisit this event. Thank you, too, to the experts who took the time to help put the drama in its proper context.
It’s an honour to share this prize with the team at Das Magazin, who worked so hard to bring this to press; I’m especially grateful to the always brilliant Christof Gertsch, and to Bruno Ziauddin for choosing to publish the text in full.
